web design

Basic website: approximately $800
Complex website involving programming, such as a dynamic website that has easy-to-update pages: $1500

  • Basic mockup: This is done in Photoshop or Illustrator and shows the client how the website will eventually look when it is changed from an image to HTML/CSS code. It is relatively easy to change. A single mockup is $240, two completely different designs are $350. Both these prices include minor revisions, such as adjusting colors, navigational items, and so forth. Once the homepage mockup has been approved, a subsection mockup that is significantly different than the homepage is $60
  • Home page. This time-intensive process involves taking the Photoshop/Illustrator mockup and coding it into an HTML page that can be put on a web server.  $300.
  • Additional pages. $100 for the construction of an HTML template for an inside page, and $30 per simple page built on a template.
  • Dynamic, updateable pages (this means that the owner can update information on the website, including images, videos, or text, without the assistance of a web designer, through an easy-to-use admin interface). $900 for entire website, $300 a section (including updateable text boxes, photo albums, or video albums).
  • Editing. It is highly recommended to bring in a professional editor who will check the spelling, punctuation, general writing, and all links on the site. $100 for small, 5-page site, $150 for larger site.
  • Image search. For many websites, it’s necessary to do a substantial search for either one image or a bunch of images, in order to get enough material to populate the site, or to create a branded look for the site. While some search for images for the homepage is built into the basic design cost, anything above and beyond the standard search is $60/hour. This usually involves anywhere from a half an hour to two hours of work. Images that are used on the website are billed separately. If found off iStockphoto, they are generally from $10 for a photograph to $15 for an illustration. Other sites generally charge much more. The more the client can help to find images for the designer, the more money can be shaved off the design time and cut back on the final costs. The client can either create a lightbox (an online cart of photos/illustrations) on a stock site or tell designer the site name and image file numbers. The designer will not charge a markup on photos or illustrations, but does charge for the time used to find and purchase the images.
  • Writing. For a fee of $100/page, have your pages written by a professional writer.
  • Domain and/or hosting setup.  If the process is too confusing for you to purchase your own hosting and domain name (at a company such as GoDaddy.com), SpyCat can do this for you. This involves purchasing the domain (that means registering for YourCompany.com, a yearly fee of about $10-$15), setting up the hosting (purchasing space on a webserver  to which you can upload files (about $10/month), setting up an email account and/or email forwarding, and getting the FTP address, FTP login, and FTP password (these three elements are necessary to post up HTML pages to the site). Most anyone can do this themselves, but it may take time and could get frustrating for people with few technical skills. $60.
  • Simple logo charge. If you don’t have a logo, SpyCat can make one up quicky as part of the website design. Keep in mind, however, that it will not be the well-developed, stand alone brand identity piece that a full logo charge will bring. $60, not including revisions. This also includes revising/retouching any logos that have not been done by a professional designer (sometimes a client may have a logo, but it needs to be redone or retraced if not available in a vector format like .ai or .eps)
  • Custom Photographs. SpyCat generally uses stock photography to save money for the client. In certain cases, though, it is necessary to do custom work to create a specific brand identity. Photo shoots with professional lighting are generally about $400. If Client is interested in using custom photos for the website, it is generally recommended to do a professional shoot instead of taking home photos, as non-professional photos generally involve so much touchup from a graphic designer that in the end the upfront savings are overshadowed by photo processing charges by graphic designer.  SpyCat does not do photo shoots, but can recommend an experienced professional to complete the job.
  • Custom Illustration. Sometimes a professional illustrator is brought in to do a custom drawing.  This is generally about $500, although it could be more or less depending upon the complexity of the requested image.
  • Search Engine Optimization. $40/page.
  • Advanced Programming. (Note that without specific details from a client, these are very rough estimates). Charges are in addition to the general design charges generated by the initial mockup and homepage design.
    1. Downloadable music/video site. $900. This involves a website where the owner can update multimedia content from an admin panel and users can download media from the site.
    2. Ecommerce site. $1100. This price can vary depending upon the complexity of the online store. The user will be able to update/delete new sales items through an admin panel.
    3. Online repository. $1000. This allows a firm to upload files for its customers/clients, who sign with a login and password to a secured area. Firm can upload new files, make new folder, and delete files.
